Spiced Apple Cider

Inspired by Flavor Bender

Ingredients

  • 2 quarts apple juice

  • 1 cinnamon stick, broken up small

  • 10 allspice

  • 5 cloves

  • 5 peppercorns

  • rind of one orange with as little pith as possible

Optional Ingredients

  • seeds from 5 cardamom pods

  • 1 star anise

  • 1-3 tablespoons of red wine per cup

  • slices of the orange, pith removed

How to Prepare

  1. Heat apple juice, orange rind and dry spices in a lidded pan or crockpot until almost simmering for 30-60 minutes or longer. To start the flavors extracting faster, you can microwave the dry spices in 1/2 cup water to steep like tea, then add to juice.

  2. The orange rind and spices will tend to sink in the pot, but you can also put them in a large tea ball to make scooping the cider easier.

  3. Serve hot, with an optional splash of red wine, fruit garnish, or cinnamon stick.
