We have a very exciting opportunity to learn about pruning from a local expert, and help provide support for a project to prune the trees in an Encinitas elementary school orchard. Our Chair Marcia says, “In my five years with the chapter, we’ve not had a pruning experience like this.”
Here’s how it will go:

10:00 a.m. – 11:15 a.m.: Nalani Vaughn, founder of Fruitmommy, will speak about pruning fruit trees - techniques and general knowledge.

11:15 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.: Chapter members, teachers, parents, and school children will practice the techniques on the fruit trees located on the Ocean Knoll Elementary School property in Encinitas.

This opportunity came to us from a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) biologist assigned to North County San Diego, Shea O’Keefe, who together with the school identified a need to care for the extensive orchard, including learning about annual pruning. We offer a huge thanks to Dan Huff (Vice Chair, NSD board) who connected with Fruitmommy about helping us out with some education. Nalani is donating her time and experience due to the unique opportunity of teaching this skill to such a variety of learners.

NSD members that want to help prune - please bring your pruning equipment (we will want to stay off ladders), including alcohol wipes if you have them. For those that want to attend the education session, please stay to help collect and label scion that we can then bring to our scion exchange at month’s end.

Registration is required. Please email Marcia at fallermarcia@gmail.com if you are interested in attending. It’s going to be a ton of fun!
