There won't be an orchard tour in August, but we will have two orchard tours in September.

On Saturday September 6, from 10-12, our group will have a private tour of the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) project, next to the flower fields in Carlsbad. This is a demonstration site where they are growing blueberries, ginger, and turmeric in containers both outdoors and in two types of high tunnels, and studying things like yields for different varieties, and pest management.

From the UC ANR staff: “Learn how to grow ginger, turmeric, and blueberries in your backyard! At our Small-Scale Urban Agriculture Demonstration Site at the Carlsbad Flower Fields, we are growing blueberries, ginger, and turmeric. By testing different growing systems, soil types, fertilizers, and plant varieties, this research project aims to determine the best production practices for growing high-value crops in small-scale urban settings in Southern California. At the end of this project, a how-to production guide containing our results and recommendations will be widely available.”
