Richard has had a lifelong passion for gardening, especially plants that produce edible crops. It all started with that quintessential California kids’ project of suspending an avocado pit in water and watching it germinate and grow.
Since then, he has dabbled around in many areas of plant horticulture, and found the one that most captivates his interest is the subtropical fruits and vegetables. There are so many rare (for us) yet delicious fruits from other parts of the world, and many might grow well in our climate. Fifty years ago, how many people in this country had even heard of an avocado?
Today, the cherimoya and the dragon fruit are a couple of candidates to be the next popular fruit. What about tomorrow? Will it be the jaboticaba, the achacha, the salak, the cambui? There are so many possibilities out there and we just need people to try growing them.
Richard is a past officer in the North San Diego County CRFG chapter and a newly minted San Diego County Master Gardener. He will be presenting on the many novel and unusual subtropical fruits that you can grow in your garden.
