All About Figs, for Fig Foodies in Southern California, Presented by Amy Kinsey
Amy will be discussing her experiences in growing fig trees over the last 10 years, including how and why she became interested in figs. She will cover everything about figs, from selecting varieties, planting trees and harvesting fruit. She will also discuss propagation, growth management (fertilization and pests) as well as harvesting cuttings and recommending sellers.
Amy Kinsey travels throughout California to research, educate, and promote inspiration to other gardeners to explore the world of fig trees. She considers herself the “Fig Foodie” of the global Fig community, and rightfully so. She is known across many Fig community websites for comparing Fig characteristics with other renowned Fig collectors. Her experience over the years comes from researching and taste testing thousands of varieties of fig trees locally as well as from many regions around the world.
Her goal is to educate others on ways to grow economically and efficiently this amazing fruit tree. Her simplified growing methods eliminate the stress of cultivating from mere cuttings into beautiful fig bearing trees for the novice and experienced gardener. While growing rare varieties may be enjoyable to some, she wants to introduce to the community the best, reliable, and most productive varieties that hold the highest quality of flavor.
Kinsey holds a BS in psychology from San Diego State University. She currently lives in Chula Vista, California with her husband and children. After serving 14 years in the U.S. Navy, she has found "figging" and gardening has helped enrich her social psychology needs. She has enjoyed getting to know a large community of plant growers. She feels her work helps others escape some of life’s challenges while teaching them a wonderful, delicious, new hobby.
